Community Meeting with Cr Julian Simmonds

5/7/2015

Cr Julian Simmonds attended a meeting of Long Pocket residents  at St Andrews Place on Thursday night 2/7/14, regarding the UQ development at the old DPI site at Long Pocket . A range of issues were discussed. The essence of these was general community opposition to UQ being granted an extension to their CID extension application for the Long Pocket site, which would allow UQ to develop the site free from council regulation .

The reasons behind the community's objection to the CID extension relate to:
  • Increased traffic congestion along Harts, Indooroopilly, and Meiers Roads.
  • Preservation of the amenity of the area.
  • Public safety concerns as a result of increased traffic congestion.
  • Increased on-street parking that could readily result from the development.
  • Environmental impact : UQ is preserving green space at the St Lucia campus at the expense of green space in the local community.

In essence the community would like UQ's development and activities to stay within the confines of the site, and not spill out and adversely affect the local community. The DPI, CSIRO, and Sugar Research Australia have all existed harmoniously with the local community. So too should UQ.

As a community we are very grateful to Cr Simmonds for attending the meeting and for his attention to our concerns.
